Jacqueline Beatrice de Jong (Hengelo, February 3, 1939 – Amsterdam, June 29, 2024) was an influential Dutch visual artist, draftsman, sculptor, and graphic artist. She is one of the most distinctive voices in postwar European art and achieved international fame through her involvement with the Situationist International and her multidisciplinary artistic practice.
De Jong worked across various media, including drawings, paintings, prints, and sculptures, in which expressive lines, bright colors, and a raw, corporeal visual language are central. Her work explores themes of power, conflict, eroticism, violence, and human motivation, often with a confrontational and playful undertone. Influenced by Expressionism, Cobra, and Situationist theory, she developed a visual language that is both politically charged and personal.
In addition to her autonomous artistic practice, De Jong played a key role as publisher and editor of the legendary magazine The Situationist Times (1962–1967). This influential artists' magazine served as an international platform for artists, thinkers, and architects and is today considered a key publication within the avant-garde of the 1960s.
Jacqueline de Jong's work has been exhibited internationally and is included in major museum collections. Her oeuvre is considered essential for understanding the postwar avant-garde and the development of experimental, politically conscious art practices in Europe.
With her uncompromising attitude, intellectual acuity, and visual power, Jacqueline de Jong has left a lasting impression on Dutch and international art history.
