    This large painting is by Dirk Herman Willem Filarski (Amsterdam, 1885 – Zeist, 1964), a renowned representative of the Bergen School. It is an exceptional work painted in the South of France. Filarski was a versatile artist who worked in a wide range of techniques, including painting, watercolour, drawing, etching, lithography, woodcuts and linocuts. His oeuvre includes landscapes, cityscapes, flowers and still lifes.

    As an Impressionist, Filarski was known for his distinctive use of colour and often impasto application of paint, both of which are clearly evident in this work. The thickly applied paint gives the composition a powerful and expressive quality. The painting is presented in a well-maintained frame and is signed in the lower right corner.

  • Over kunstenaar

    De Nederlandse schilder Dirk Filarski werd in 1885 in Amsterdam geboren en groeide daar ook op. Van 1905 tot 1906 werd Filarski opgeroepen om de militaire dienstplicht te vervullen en daarna verhuisde hij naar Bergen.

    Zijn naam wordt, samen met die van Arnout Colnot, vaak in verband gebracht met de Bergense School. In zijn werk zien we een voorkeur voor landschappen waarvan hij er een groot aantal schilderde tijdens reizen door Europa en Noord-Afrika.

    Aanvankelijk stond Filarski erom bekend met lichtere kleuren te schilderen, maar na 1910 ging hij over op donkere tinten als bruin en groen.

    Zijn werk kreeg een air van macht en expressionisme. Van zijn hand zijn ook stillevens en afbeeldingen van bloemen in grijze en fel contrasterende kleuren bekend.
